Well yet again FloppingOut’s own Nick Spano did a great job of breaking the Carmelo Anthony to NY blockbuster trade as if a cheeseburger was on the line. Yes FloppingOut even beat the “10 source” Chris Broussard to his own dart board reporting.
Well now that the Melo deal is done, and the details are in; what will the Knickerbockers look like? And is this actually a good trade?
PG- Chauncey Billups (16.5 ppg)
SG- Landry Fields (10.1 ppg)
SF- Carmelo Anthony (25.2 ppg)
PF- Amar’e Sroudemire (26.1 ppg)
C-Ronny Turiaf (4.7 ppg)
Same Old Scrubs: Kelenna Azubuike, Toney Douglas, Roger Mason, Andy Rautins, Bill Walker, Shawne Williams
New Scrubs: Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter, Renaldo Balkman, Corey Brewer
Why it Will Work:
From an Offensive Perspective…
Offensively there is not much that can go wrong with this trade. The addition of Melo, who is one of the best pure scorers in the game, will elevate this offense and bring D’Antoni’s “just score” philosophy to scary levels. Also having Amar’e and Melo on the same floor will open up room for Melo’s “WET” jumpshots and Amar’e's “Go to the basket with no plan” dunkshots.
In addition, when a defense collapses on either Amar’e or Melo (whoever has the ball) it will leave room for Billups who is a much more refined three point shooter than Raymond Felton. Similarly Fields, Walker, Williams, Brewer (who can all shoot) should have more room to operate from deep. In regards to Ronny Turiafs’ place on offense; he should honestly go sit in the stands so his unaware, floppy ass does not clog the middle.
Statistically, the Knicks are second in scoring in the NBA at 106.2 ppg and guess who they only trail at #1?… Yes the Denver Nuggets at 107.6 ppg.
So now that the Knicks have acquired the Nuggets 2 top scorers (Melo and Billups) it is about to go down and get real wet in NY as well as in Mike D’Antoni’s pants.
From a Defensive Perspective…
Well on paper the Knicks did not upgrade much, if at all on defense. But what can work and I believe will, is a fresh squad that will truly believe they can win a championship. This belief alone should translate to a new found energy on the defensive end for NY. It may turn out that the Knicks give up 129 points a night instead of 130.
Why it Won’t Work:
1) If their is not much chemistry on the floor between all these “new” parts. Hey you never know.
2) If the pressure to win builds up in NY especially if the Knicks do not manage to win a championship within two or three years. This would result in a negative energy that would plague the Knicks, especially should be PMS PosterBoy Mike D’Antoni.
3) If the Miami Heat are just too damn good…
4) If Dolan’s love affair continues with Isiah Thomas and he eventually gets real authority…(for the record I doubt Zeke advised Dolan on this trade…and even if so… Isiah needs to stay the Flop away).
Why this Deal Was Right:
The Melo deal sets up NY for the future as the Boston Celtics will eventually die from natural causes, Atlanta Hawks’ players love to hit that bong, Miami is most likely cursed, and 2012 will bring free agents Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Dwight Howard to the table and NY should have the cap room to sign one of them.
From a roster standpoint, grabbing a franchise player at the caliber of Carmelo Anthony without giving up the tremendous young talent of Landry Fields, foreshadows a ceiling as high as Ricky Williams in a tropical rainforest.
Also getting rid of Wilson Chandler, Eddie Curry, and Danilo Gallinari, players who have been on past losing Knicks teams and lived in the whole “We Suck” Knickerbocker lifestyle, is a good thing. The Knicks have had a losing mentality for a so longggg (worst losing percentage in NBA ’2000-2010′) that having basically an entirely new roster (no one on Knicks’ roster is even a full year in besides Toney Douglas) should bring some new positive energy to the Garden, on top of what already currently exists.
At the end of the day, Anthony is just too good to not acquire, especially if you get to keep Stoudemire and Fields. Who knows if Anthony could have cost a lot less if signed over the summer, but at this point who cares?
@Magic Johnson : “Congrats to @carmeloanthony and the NY Knicks. Get ready Big Apple…a championship is coming in a couple of years!”
