Let’s say there is a five star QB recruit and he has a ton of potential. As a scout should I stop watching your tape and get into other scouting criterium, or should I delve into the tape JUST a little bit more? In my opinion there is one glaring weakness in scouting criteriums at all levels: most scouts do not take into account what I call the Flinch Test. This will separate actual 5 star recruits from on the surface ones…

The definition of flinching is “making a quick, nervous movement of the face or body as an instinctive reaction to fear or pain” (Websters, thank you very much).

So in essence, when you flinch…you do not thoroughly do what you intended, due to unintended reactions. When you flinch the ball is not delivered as accurately and does not have that zip you need.

Here is an example of a NFL QB failing the flinch test for a play (usually if it happens once, happens all the time)…

Blaine Gabbert cocks his arm back to throw, and as he is going through his throwing progression he is simultaneously nailed by a defender. As this happens Gabbert tenses up, closes his eyes, and delivers the ball with hesitation. This causes the ball velocity to go down, flutter, and a defender has more time to break on the ball and comes up with an interception.

FAIL!!!

Now Ladies and Gents that is a situation that has happened to Blaine Gabbert way too many times throughout his bad NFL career, because Blaine Gabbert terrible fails the Flinch Test. I correctly predicted this about Blaine Gabbert before he entered the NFL draft. I was watching film of Gabbert at Missouri and saw that yes he did have a very good arm, but it wasn’t very good when he was getting hit or pressured. He was getting so tense under duress that it caused his footballs to do unintended things. At that point I told myself wow…someone is going to draft this kid high, and be very disappointed. They will fall in love with his arm, and not look at this glaring weakness. Too bad the Jacksonville Jaguars picked Gabbert 10th overall in the 2011 NFL draft and paid him millions of dollars..

Mark Sanchez is another example of someone who FAILS the Flinch Test. Not only do I know this from being a huge Jets fan but just look at his eyes below? Closed! Remember what your coach said in baseball? Never close your eyes when swinging…always eyes on the ball. Same for football Marky. Don’t get too nervous.

No wonder he led NFL in turnovers last 2 years.

Now delivering a football without any hesitation regardless of a defense’s presence and/or pressure – is the toughest thing for a QB to do well. However, if you have can pull it off and have that fearlessness about you, and not flinch… you have a much higher chance of being successful. The best always play the position as if they are throwing a 7 on 7 (Rodgers, Brees, Brady etc…). Does not matter if they are getting hit by a defender, they MAKE SURE that ball gets to the intended receiver as intended, AND ALWAYS KEEP THEIR EYES OPEN!

Now my favorite example of a non flinching QB is hands down Aaron Rodgers. I remember watching a Packers preseason game replay of Aaron Rodgers (in slow motion) and as he was getting absolutely decleated by a defender…Aaron did not flinch even the slightest amount, and SHOCKER the ball was delivered perfectly. I have no idea how he did it, but he did. I then told myself….heck if this guy can make PERFECT THROWS while getting absolutely de-cleated, then there is nothing he can’t do with a football.

PASS!!!!NO FLINCH! EYES ALWAYS OPEN!

Not only does the flinch test apply to QBs, but any position in football and sports. If you are hesitating and tense when the defense is either on your back or pressuring you …. it will lessen your game.

AN EXAMPLE OF SOMEONE WHO TERRIBLY FAILS THE FLINCH TEST!!!!

MATTHEW MONTGOMERY BARKLEY. FAIL FAIL FAIL!!!!…SHOCKER, SHOCKER, SHOCKER, SHOCKER!

#USC breeds em to flinch!

Update: Of course Tebow passes the flinch test. Who do you think he is…Mark Sanchez?

That would be a PASS for Timboy!

I want Geno Smith! Flat out. As you know I am a big Tebow fan, but that train has left. Time for someone that will make Jet fans forget about Mark Sanchez and maybe even win a Super Bowl!!!

Geno Smith is a beast and would fit perfect in a west coast system (what OC Marty will implement). Geno has a quick release, makes quick decisions, is extremely accurate, knows how to extend plays, and just gets IT. Killin’ it with small receivers at West Virginia (only 1 starter over 6′) would fit perfect with Holmes and Kerley (who are both under 6 foot). Geno gets the ball out so fast that he allows his receivers to get YAC…>THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT MAKES FOR A KILLER WEST COAST OFFENSE!

Now if you need Geno to get into a shoot out…GENO WILL KILL IT (vs Baylor – 45 for 51, 656 passing yards, 8TDs, 0 INTS!)…if you need him to manage the game…GENO WILL KILL YA (vs Kansas – 23 of 24 for 407 yards).

Watching this dude play QB is like watching a machine…

Not to mention Geno Smith is extremely intelligent and loves to read. Which believe it or not adds a ton to his prospect status. Now some skeptics will bring up the fact that defenses figured out Geno Smith when West Virginia lost 5 games in a row…but look at how they lost. Their defense gave up 49, 55, 39, 55, 50 points! What is he supposed to do? He was still putting up highly respectable numbers and making a ton of plays…

Not sure why the mania/hype behind Geno Smith is not what it was behind RGIII, but I think his prospect is right there with RGIII. He should be the #1 QB off the board. If I was Idzik, I’d get on the phone, call Andy Reid and offer him Revis (who I don’t want to trade but ton of $$$), the #9 pick, and an ALL YOU CAN EAT BBQ at a local KC joint for the #1 pick and GENO SMITH.

GENO against Baylor! Absolute SLAUGHTERING!!!!

Sparano and Elway look a likes?

Yesterday around the 5:15 pm hour the Jets announced the hiring of former Seattle VP of Football Administration John Idzik as new GM, and former Philadelphia Offensive Coordinator/Assistant HC Marty Mornhinweg as OC. First off let me just say this…..the hiring sequence was odd. The Jets announced Idzik as GM and then a half hour later Marty as OC, which tells me two things potentially: 1) John Idzik had a deal in place a couple weeks ago and Idzik helped pick Marty… or as many speculate 2) Marty was a Rex Ryan choice with a sprinkle of Woody Johnson. OH BOY. The last time Rex Ryan picked a OC…the guy thought Tim Tebow was a Holiday ornament named Ronnie Brown. I’m pretty sure I had a better rap career at Colgate (FREESTYLE FRIDAY BITCHESSS!!!!) than Tony Sparano as a NFL offensive coordinator.

My thoughts on Idzik….

The guy has done it all…besides GM. He is definitely a more cap oriented guy, which is not a bad thing. And if you don’t buy that just look at his bio on the Seahawks website – which starts with “Idzik oversees player negotiations, the team’s compliance with the NFL salary cap, player personnel transactions, all football operations budgets, staff and team contracts, team travel and most aspects of the day-to-day football operations….while also remaining active in player evaluations.”

I hope there are 28 hours in a John Idzik day.

Hey it is not a bad thing Idzik has a ton of experience dealing with financials…we do need a guy who can put us in a position to eventually sign Landry, Revis, potentially a QB, and some new defensive starters – while we are sitting ~19m over the cap. Now would I have rather have inked in talent evaluating orientated guys like Gamble, Popp, or Sundquist….YES. But Idzik will be fine. He helped build a Tampa Bay team that won a Super Bowl in ’03 and an Arizona team that went to the Ship. Speaking of SHIPS…apparently Idzik runs a very tight ship…WHICH IS EXACTLY what the Jets need. I mean I love tight SHIPS!!!! Because we all know the only thing that locker room needed the last 2 years was a couple shot girls (media had more to do with that than most players except BART COUGGHHH .

One unnamed NFL agent (not a Manish story NON SHOCKER!!!) told Newsday this about Idzik:

“It is a disservice, because it doesn’t sum up all the attributes John’s bringing to the table,” he wrote in an email to Newsday Saturday. “John’s resume speaks for itself. He has a strong understanding of the CBA / salary cap while also understanding the game of football and the personnel needed to win games for a particular system [offense and defense].

“He grew up the son of a coach, he played the game, he coached the game, all before crossing over to the personnel and admin side of the business. Not to mention his academic accomplishments. Great hire, in my opinion.”

He was a pro player assistant during his early years with Tampa, and did coach at the college level (Duke and SUNY Buffalo)….so he at least should be able to find a blocking TE.

Now for my thoughts on MARTY!!!!!!

To be quite honest if I saw that picture to your left, combined with Marty’s NFL head coaching record (5-27) and the fact that he personally saw 49 ints in two years HC’ing in Det…I would pass on the 50 year old man. I would have hired some OC out of college who is ready to bring a new found energy to the game, and not just a new found pay check. This offense needs a guy who will be on top of this offense 25 hours a day and Marty is 50, and coaching since 1985. Does he have the energy and motivation? Hey maybe he will get Idzik and his 28 hour days to help him out.

Now in Marty’s defense…he was OC for some extremely successful offenses. I’m pretty sure 7 out of 10 years Marty called plays, his offense was ranked top 10. Which is very good. But on the skeptical @hashtagfrankie side, he was calling plays under two extremely offensive minded coaches in Steve Mariucci and Andy Reid. You could call Marty the Mike Pettine of offensive coordinators…which hey…could be a great thing. Good luck in Buffalo Mike…just know there are no newspapers in Buffalo for you to affect ///

But at this point….I DO NOT WANT TO JUDGE and ink either one as a bad move until I see the moves these guys make…WITH THE FIRST BEING THE NEXT Jets QB!!! And I’ll tell you this…if these two decide to go with Mark Sanchez….it will tell me more than enough about THEIR INEPTITUDE and you DO NOT want to be following me on twitter. I will GO OFF!!!! Tweet me YO: @HashtagFrankie

I am sick and tired hearing about this “eye test” standard for judging talent, and how this player passes the “eye test” but this other one doesn’t etc… I don’t believe in it, it is way too subjective, and it doesn’t mean anything. As you may know, when someone passes the eye test it means they look and play the part. They have all the attributes that make for a great pro (QB has a great arm, tall, strong, nimble etc…) Now, in my opinion, to say an athlete passes the eye test and will be great, is like saying a hot blonde makes for a great wife. I just don’t value it, because it doesn’t take into account the actual team value of an individual player. It is a selfish way to judge athletes, in a selfish way.

Now to be fair, I have USED the “eye test” standard myself with many guys. BUT I AM DONE! Just like I am done with the NFL COMBINE – which to me tells you nothing about the team value of a player. Better off spending an hour with the prospect at his house. I remember I told to my friend Dibi that John Wall would one day be better than Derrick Rose because of how fast Wall got up and down the court. Well I now look like an idiot, because the fact is John Wall never had GREAT STATS at Kentucky, and doesn’t have that SHOULDER CHIP like a D Rose. And those are my two basic criteria for judging any talent…

Criteria #1 – GREAT STATS (numbers) at their perspective level. Very rarely do you see a GREAT professional player in the pros, who did not have GREAT STATS at their previous level of competition. And I am talking about overall stats. So for a QB it would be high TDs, YARDS, CMP% and Winning %. A basketball player: PPG, RPG, APG, FG%, Winning % (always). So when owners pick guys like Enes Kanter, JeMarcus Russell or dare I say Mark Sanchez in the top 5…I SHAKE MY DAMN HEAD BECAUSE THOSE GUYS DID NOT HAVE GREAT STATS AT THEIR PREVIOUS LEVEL but were picked at a very high spot as if they did have great stats. Enes Kanter averaged 9 points a game in the Turkish basketball league, JeMarcus Russell averaged only 2,786 yards passing (in 2 years starting) at LSU, and Mark Sanchez had more games at USC where he threw under 200 yards than over 300 (SHOCKER HE DID EXACTLY THAT WITH THE JETS). Why did teams go out of their way to draft these guys? Oh they PASSED THE EYE TEST, right. Well sucks for the GMs and coaches who picked those guys because more than half of them got fired for those picks.

Criteria #2 – Shoulder Chip. Pro athletes need to have a reason to want to GET IT DONE. They are already making millions and successful, so what will then drive them to the next level. Brady to this day still has a thing against teams passing up on him, Aaron Rodgers openly says he hates San Fran for drafting Alex Smith over him (watch the Aaron Rodgers E 60 to really get a sense HERE), Russell Wilson wants to prove every team wrong for passing up on him, MJ is still trying to get back at his high school coach for passing up on him, and the list goes on and on…

AND someone with a chip on their shoulder 99.999% of time comes with the fearless trait, which is a killer attribute for an athlete. The competition is too aggressive at the pro level to have a guy who is a little unsure. Tell you a story… I knew Aaron Rodgers was the real deal during a Green Bay preseason game in 2008, when I saw Aaron Rodgers take a hit in slow mo, and the camera panned in on his face and HE DID NOT FLINCH!!!! #FEARLESS. Now mind you, Aaron got blindsided and didn’t even see the hit, but he never flinched. (Yes I did pick him in fantasy that year ;). Being fearless is a trait that plays hand in hand with the shoulder chip, and is a killer attribute for an athlete because it is their drive and determination to still be the best even when they actually are the best.

Find me a division 1 college athlete who has GREAT STATS and A CHIP ON THEIR SHOULDER and I WILL SHOW YOU A WINNER. Forget the eye test…it is way too subjective and gets you passing up on a Tom Brady because he ran a 5.4 40 and didn’t look like a pro. And this my friends is the money ball mentality that is still not being implemented by these dinosaur owners and GMs today…

Now obviously you have some athletes who have greats stats and the shoulder chip, but because of let’s say physical deficiencies, do not pan out. But for all the ones that FAIL (pass the criteria), 10 pass. Just some 4am thoughts

I have been super busy lately so I can’t remember the last time I deployed this strategy, but I know it works…

Next time you go out to the club or bar – invite and get at least 5 chicks to meet you there…

Ya damn right. Nothing gives you more value to other women or puts you in a better mood than rolling up to a bar with 5-15 chicks. Don’t think you have to cater 100% to them either, you are out as friends. And don’t worry if you start wandering or conversing with women; you will be good in your 5-15 eyes because you invited them out. Plus you will always have a backup if you take an over board shot. Now go on Facebook or your cell RIGHT NOW, and invite some girls unless you want to keep going out with your boys and creeping on 4am Diner chicks.

Sad to see the QUEEN RYAN #FHATTY getting the axe in Dallas. We all know Jerry Jones is a real D BAG so something like this was expected. Any move that gets the Cowboys closer to missing the playoffs again, seems like the right move. Rob ended his tenure in Dallas with this…

“I inherited a team that was 31st in the league in defense and made them better,” Ryan told ESPNDallas.com’s Tim MacMahon. “I (expletive) made them a hell of a lot better. I’ll be out of work for like five minutes.”

I wonder what the (expletive) was? Bets?

If Jerry Jones didn’t have the biggest EGO in football he would have moved away from Jason Garrett who brings 0 leadership and toughness to a locker room that needs it. Think about who is in charge on that team….Jason Garrett and Tony Romo. Two real softies…then you wonder why TOUGH SOBS like THE GIANTS and this year the REDSKINS (with psycho Shannahan) SLAP UP THEM COWBOYS.

Dallas would have been better off promoting Rob to Head Coach…
