ESPN RADIO: NFL SR Analyst John Clayton Says He Expects Peyton Manning To RETIRE (AUDIO)

Well since everyone else is doing it, why not ESPN? If you watched the NFL Pro Bowl on NBC, PETER KING of Sports Illustrated and the NFL on NBC, said that the growing speculation is that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is having a difficult time getting back to full arm strength, five months after having his third neck surgery, and “may” retire from the NFL.

King also tweeted that Gil Brandt (NFL.com Senior analyst), added that his gut feeling is that “we’ve seen the last of Manning in a football uniform.” Oh we’re not done, there’s more. Former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy reportedly said that if Manning isn’t healthy, having full arm strength by the time the 2012-2013 NFL season starts, then it’s HIGHLY LIKELY that Manning will retire from the NFL.
All those speculations come from pretty solid sources, but the most persuasive of them all was ESPN.com’s NFL senior writer, John Clayton. Clayton was on ESPN Radio’s SportsCenter tonight with Amy Lawrence and he said that he fully expects Peyton to hang em’ up.

Wow…I mean I am not TOTALLY shocked, but I am surprised. I totally understand why Peyton is calling it quits. The man has had THREE MAJOR NECK SURGERIES. This isn’t just a bum knee or even a bad shoulder. We’re talking nerve injuries, possible risk of injury to the spinal cord, and long term health risks. It just isn’t worth it. The man is a first ballot hall of famer and one of the BEST to ever play the game. If it turns out to be true, then the man just wasn’t healthy enough to play, because Peyton had AT LEAST 3 great years left in the tank. I give him props for not Farve-ing it and just sticking around to stick around. Peyton wants to play at an elite level and it is clear that he can’t and won’t. Stay tuned, it will certainly get more interesting, especially with an idiot like Irsay around.

PS: Looks like Rob Lowe isn’t an idiot after all. As I’m sure you heard, the famous actor tweeted two weeks ago that he heard from “sources” that Peyton will be retiring. Props to breaking it first….I guess, Rob.
