Cam Newton Is Nasty At Football But Is One Cocky Bastard…
We all have seen the show that Carolina Panthers quarterback and first round pick, Cam Newton has put on this season. He has been well worth that number one pick and has exceeded the expectations of many. Cam will (barring injury in week 17) become the first QB to pass for 4,000 yards and rush for 500 yards in a single season, and has also set the single season passing record for a rookie (passing Peyton “I gotta get out of the strip club” Manning. Right now Cam has 3,893 passing yards and 674 rushing yards (There have been 4 cases where a QB passed for 4,000 and rushed for 400 yards: Daunte Culpepper (2004), Steve Young (1993 & 1998), and Jeff Garcia (2000). Steve Young got the closest to 500 when he rushed for 454 yards in 1998)
“I can’t sit up here and look at it like, oh man, my critics are racist,” Newton says. “I blame JaMarcus Russell and to some degree Vince Young. If you have the opportunity to make that kind of money doing something you love to do, why would you screw it up? I’m trying to be a trailblazer. If Baylor’s Robert Griffin decides to come out, I want people to say ‘He can be the next Cam Newton’ instead of ‘He’s gonna be the next JaMarcus Russell.’”
“I had people who can’t throw a football telling me my mechanics were wrong,” says Newton. “I had people taking shots at my character, classifying me as a thug, as a hoodlum. After Week 3 or 4, all these same people wanted an interview. I said, ‘You were giving me all this crap and had so much to say about how I was gonna play, and now you wanna talk? No. Just sit back and watch the show, man.’”
Okay I understand gettin’ at his haters (Incarcerated Bob voice) but why in the world would you mention JaMarcus a.k.a The Codeine Monster and Vince “dream team” Young? Those two weren’t the reasons you were criticized pre-draft. There is nothing in comparison to your game and JaMarcus/Vince’s game besides the color of your skin. Oh and I don’t get it Cam, do you just simply NOT WANT TO SCREW UP (like JaMarcus and Vince) or do you want to be a trailblazer? Not the best route to go Cam. Maybe you should just continue to ball out and stay away from a microphone or a pad of paper. Stats aside, you got a long way to get to Vince Young’s 31-19 as a starter.
And we can’t forget about these comments a couple weeks when sitting with Stevland Wilson of ESPN The Magazine….
“What happens when you take a lion out of the safari and try to take him to your place of residence and make him a house pet? It ain’t going to happen. That’s the type of person that I am. I’m that lion. The house that I’m in is somewhat of a tarnished house where losing is accepted. But I’m trying to change that, whether I’m going to have to turn that house into a safari, or I’m just going to have to get out of that house. I’m not saying I’m trying to leave this place. I’m just trying to get everybody on my level.”
I love Newton as a player and he seems like a chill guy but he has a ways to go before getting to 31-19.
